Pragmatic Works Workbench PRO (the desktop client) must be installed on a desktop running SQL Server and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
1. The SSIS components are not redistributable – that is, Microsoft licensing does not allow Pragmatic Works to bundle the SSIS DLLs into our installers.
2. The SSIS components must be available on the local computer where the software is being run in order to interact locally with SSIS packages.
3. You do not have to install all of SQL Server. When the SQL Server Feature Selection page comes up in the wizard, you can un-select everything but the Integration Services feature. By doing this, it will avoid having a local instance of the SQL Server database engine on the workstation.
Question: Can any edition of SQL Server 2016 suffice for these scenarios and is there a runtime only version of SQL Server/SSIS 2016 that would meet Pragmatic Works's requirements?
Answer: SQL Server Developer Edition, which is free for everyone as of SQL Server 2016. Prior versions are free for most companies under any sort of MSDN or volume
